With WinSCP you can easily upload and manage files on your Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instance/server over SFTP protocol.
Here's the one sentence blurb from Wikipedia: 'WinSCP is a free and open-source SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3 and SCP client for Microsoft Windows. Its main function is secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager and file synchronization functionality.' Connecting to the Amazon S3 protocol is now natively supported as of WinSCP version 5.13, WinSCP uses the REST interface to interact with S3. This guide creates an S3 bucket, an IAM user, an IAM access policy with least priviledge, then generating access and secret keys for API access to allow WinSCP to seamlessy migrate files over. WinSCP (including v5.14 beta) does not work with AWS GovCloud S3 access. When you specify the Host-Name in your Login as s3-us-gov-west-1.amazonaws.com it gets defaulted to 'us-east-1' which is hard coded in the libs3.h source file. Further below is a snippet of the WinSCP runtime log to show the bug.
Before starting you should:
- Have WinSCP installed;
- Have Amazon EC2 instance running;
- Have enabled inbound SSH traffic from your IP address to your instance;
- Have your key pair ready;
Collect information about your EC2 instance:
- Host name: Check Public DNS column on Instances page of Amazon EC2 console. Note that the public DNS may change when instance is restarted.
- Host key fingerprint: On the first connect you will be prompted to verify server host key.
- You can locate key fingerprint in server's initial start log, when host keys are generated.1 Use Actions > Instance Settings > Get System Log command on Instances page of Amazon EC2 console:
The format of host key display in the log may differ with distribution or its version.
Alternatively useaws ec2 get-console-output
command. - If you did not save the fingerprint on the first instance run, but you have another EC2 instance that you can connect to safely (you know its fingerprints), you can connect to the target instance using private IP from the trusted instance. Staying within private Amazon network keeps you safe from man-in-the-middle attacks. When on the trusted instance terminal, you can use following commands to collect fingerprints:
- If you do not have another trusted instance, you can create new temporary instance, just for the purpose of collecting the keys. First find keys for the new temporary instance, using it's initial start log. Then collect keys of the target instance by connecting to it from the temporary instance. After that you can discard the temporary instance.
- You can locate key fingerprint in server's initial start log, when host keys are generated.1 Use Actions > Instance Settings > Get System Log command on Instances page of Amazon EC2 console:

Start WinSCP. Login dialog will appear. On the dialog:
- Make sure New site node is selected.
- On New site node, make sure SFTP protocol is selected.
- Enter your EC2 instance public DSN name (see above) into Host name box.
- User name differs with instance type:
- For an Amazon Linux AMI, the user name is
ec2-user
. - For a RHEL5 AMI, the user name is either
root
orec2-user
. - For an Ubuntu AMI, the user name is
ubuntu
. - For an Centos AMI, the user name is
centos
. - For a Fedora AMI, the user name is either
fedora
orec2-user
. - For SUSE Linux, the user name is
root
orec2-user
.
- For an Amazon Linux AMI, the user name is
- Press Advanced button to open Advanced site settings dialog and go to SSH > Authentication page.
- In Private key file box select the
.pem
private key file. WinSCP will need to convert the key to its.ppk
format (you can then use the converted.ppk
key for example with PuTTYSSH client). - Submit Advanced site settings dialog with OK button.
- Save your site settings using Save button.
- Login using Login button.
- Verify the host key by comparing fingerprints with those collected before (see above).
If you are managing a large amount of servers, and it is not feasible for you to save a site for each of them in WinSCP, consider using the user script Injecting SFTP or FTP URL to a page (Amazon EC2 management console). Sublime open source.
To connect to an EC2 instance in an Amazon VPC, you can tunnel through a NAT instance.
For details, see Connect to FTP/SFTP server which can be accessed via another server only.
In Host name, specify your Instance ID. Open source audio ripper.
Press Advanced button to open Advanced site settings dialog and go to Connection > Proxy page. There:
- For Proxy type, select Local.
- In Local proxy command, specify:
- You may need to set Do DNS name lookup at proxy end to Yes.
- Upload files to FTP server or SFTP server;
- Automate file transfers (or synchronization) to FTP server or SFTP server;
- Official AWS guide for connecting using PuTTY/WinSCP;
- Connecting securely to Google Compute Engine server with SFTP;
- Connecting securely to Microsoft Azure service with SFTP or FTPS.

WinSCP (Windows Secure Copy) is a free and open-sourceSFTP, FTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3 and SCP client for Microsoft Windows. Its main function is secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager and file synchronization functionality. For secure transfers, it uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports the SCP protocol in addition to SFTP.[4]
Development of WinSCP started around March 2000 and continues. Originally it was hosted by the University of Economics in Prague, where its author worked at the time. Since July 16, 2003, it is licensed under the GNU GPL. It is hosted on SourceForge and GitHub.[5]
Amazon S3 File Explorer
WinSCP is based on the implementation of the SSH protocol from PuTTY and FTP protocol from FileZilla.[6] It is also available as a plugin for Altap Salamanderfile manager,[7] and there exists a third-party plugin for the FAR file manager.[8]
Sftp To S3
Features[edit]
- Translated into several languages
- Integration with Windows (Drag and drop, URL, shortcut icons)
- All common operations with files
- Support for SFTP and SCP protocols over SSH-1 and SSH-2, FTP protocol, WebDAV protocol and Amazon S3 protocol.[9]
- Batch file scripting, command-line interface and .NET wrapper
- Directory synchronization in several semi or fully automatic ways
- Integrated text editor
- Support for SSH password, keyboard-interactive, public key and Kerberos (GSS) authentication
- Integrates with Pageant (PuTTY authentication agent) for full support of public key authentication with SSH
- Choice of Windows File Explorer-like or Norton Commander-like interfaces
- Optionally stores session information
- Optionally import session information from PuTTY sessions in the registry
- Able to upload files and retain associated original date/timestamps, unlike FTP clients
WinSCP as a remote editor[edit]
WinSCP can act as a remote editor. When the user clicks on a (text) file in the remote file manager, it transfers the file to the local machine and opens it in the integrated editor, allowing users to edit it locally as they would with any other text file. Alternatively, the user may choose local editors based on file extensions. Whenever the document is saved, the remote version is updated automatically.[10]
Portable version[edit]
Apart from the standard package, three portable versions are also available: A generic package[11] and two customized versions for LiberKey and PortableApps.com. The portable version runs on Wine[12] on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS and BSD.[13]
Advertisements in installer[edit]
Some older versions of the WinSCP installer included OpenCandy advertising module or bundled Google Chrome. Atom linux ubuntu. Since version 5.5.5 (August 2014) the installer does not contain any advertisement.
WinSCP itself did not and does not contain any advertisements.[citation needed]
